Berkley Warren Bedell, a native of Spirit Lake, Iowa, was a six-time Democratic Congressman (1975-1987) from Iowa's sixth district. Bedell attended Iowa State University briefly (1940-1942) before joining the United States Army (1942-1945) where he served as first lieutenant and flight trainer. In 1945, he returned to Spirit Lake and started Berkley and Company, an international fishing equipment business.
