Arvin Benjamin Shaw was born in Tipton, Iowa on December 2, 1857. He earned a B.S.E (1876) in engineering from Iowa State College (University). He married Winifred Dudley Shaw, the step-daughter of Adonija S. Welch (first President of Iowa State).
