Scope and Content

This collection (1962-1988, undated) contains documents relating to the career of Irene Beavers. The papers consist of her writings and research projects concerning home economics education. The collection also includes biographical information, photographs, presentations, and external examiner reports for the home economics programs at international universities such as the Kasetsart University in Bangkok, Thailand and the Universiti Peritanian Malaysia.

Irene Beavers was born June 4, 1926, in Hopkinsville Kentucky. She received her B.S. (1948) from Peabody College, M.S. (1953) from Iowa State College (University) in Home Economics Education. Beavers obtained her Ph.D. (1962) from the University of Wisconsin in Extension Administration. While at the University of Wisconsin she received the Pi Lambda Theta Honor.

Beavers came to Iowa State University as an Extension Assistant (1952-1954) in Cooperative Extension Services. She became the District Home Economics Supervisor (1955-1960) of Cooperative Extension Services. After receiving her Ph.D., Beavers returned to Iowa State as an Associate Professor in the Department of Home Economics Education and Adult Education (1965-1974). She was promoted to Professor (1974-1988) in the Department of Home Economics Education and Adult Education and after her retirement became Professor Emeritus (1988).

Beavers' chief interests of research were in Adult Education, Teaching Program Planning and Adult Methods of Teaching, and International Consulting.

While at Iowa State, Irene Beavers served on many university committees including the University Curriculum Committee (1978-1980), the Graduate Curriculum Committee (1978-1980), the International Programs Council (1980-1982) and the Commencement Committee (1986-1988). She also served on the Green Hills Advisory Board (1977-1982) and the Memorial Union Board (1985-1988).

Beavers also belonged to several honorary and professional societies such as Phi Kappa Phi (secretary treasurer, 1981-1983), Phi Delta Kappa, Phi Delta Gamma (Chair, 1986-1987) , Iowa Adult Ed. Assoc. (President, 1970), National Adult Ed. Research Committee (1970-1973), National Assoc. for Teacher Education in Home Economics AVA (Treasurer, 1975 -1976), and the American Association for Adult and Cont. Education Board of Directors (1984).
