Raymond F. Finn was born on October 14, 1909 in New Windsor, New York. He received his B.S. (1938) from the University of Minnesota, M.S. (1958) from Michigan State University, and Ph. D. (1966) from Michigan State University. His professional experience included the positions of Research Forester (1949-1963) for Central States, Weather Service (1943-1945) for the Army Air Force, and Research Staff (1939-1949) for Black Rock Experimental Forest. He arrived at Iowa State University as an Associate Professor (1963-1970). He retired in 1971.

Dr. Finn was a member of the American Society of Plant Physiologists, Gamma Sigma Delta, Sigma Xi, the Society of American Foresters, Tau Phi Delta, Xi Sigma Pi, and the American Soil Scientists Society.

Dr. Finn married Mary Beavers on December 29, 1940.
