Floyd George Manwiller was born on May 8, 1934 in Mitchell County, Iowa. He received his B.S. (1961) from Iowa State University in Forestry and his Ph. D. (1966) from Iowa State University in Wood Science and Plant Cytology. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a Language Specialist (1954-1958). His professional experience consisted of the positions of Graduate Assistant (1961-1964) with Iowa State University, Research Associate (1964-1965) with Iowa State University, and Wood Scientist (1966-1978) with the United States Forest Service. He accepted a faculty position as a Full Professor at Iowa State University in 1978.

Dr. Manwiller was a member of the Forest Products Research Society, the Society of Wood Science and Technology, the International Association of Wood Anatomists, Gamma Sigma Delta, and Xi Sigma Pi.
