Scope and Content

This collection (1953-1978, undated) contains a biographical information and research reports. The reports relate to conservation tillage and chemical and cultural methods of weed management and pest control. The papers also contain a small amount of correspondence with the Pioneer Hi-Bred Corn Company and a presentation about water pollution from crop production.

Walter G. Lovely was born on August 19, 1919 in Fort Fairfield, Maine. He Received his B.S. (1949) in agricultural engineering from the University of Maine. Before joining the Iowa State University faculty in 1978, Lovely served in the U.S. Marine Corps (1940-1945), was an assistant supervisor (1949-1950) of research materials at H.C. Baxter and Company, Hartland, Maine and served in several positions with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agriculture Research Service (1950-1978). Lovely provided administrative supervision of University Farm Service, Ankeny Farm Service, Farm Service Maintenance, Agricultural Engineering Service, Foundation Seed Production and coordinated the Conservation Tillage Research program for the Agriculture Experiment Station. Lovely also served as a U.S. Department of Agriculture collaborator. Lovely conducted research on tillage, weed control, and insect control machinery.
