Scope and Content

This collection (1896-1869, undated) contains records relating to Griffith’s work on behalf of WOI Radio. The papers include documents and correspondence with Federal Communications Commission as well as the Federal Radio Commission, and legal documents from a Clear Channel court case that spanned the 1940s. In addition, the collection includes radio program scripts, listener surveys, program schedules, and documents concerning to the 6 A.M. broadcast start time.



The papers also include a collection of personal correspondence between W.I. Griffith and his wife, Katherine Hess, a teacher whom he married in1904. They had 2 sons and a daughter. Additional correspondence is from their children and family friends.

Biography/Profile

W.I. Griffith (1878-1951) was the first Director (1925-1946) of \WOI Radio. He lead the radio station for more than two decade and also held the position of Educational Director (1946-1949) of the station. Throughout his time at WOI, the station survived heavy competition from neighboring states’ stations - all vying for the same frequency -as well as numerous FCC disputes caused and exacerbated by World War II.



W.I. Griffith received a B.S.A (1899) from Iowa State College (University) and an M.Di (1905) from Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa). Before working for WOI Radio, W.I. Griffith taught at several public schools and then became the principal of Victor High School, Grinnell High School, Waterloo East High School, of Waverly High School, and Benton School (St. Joseph, Missouri).
