Scope and Content

This collection (1979-2012) includes files documenting Ben Allen's tenure as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Iowa State University. The bulk of these files are speeches delivered by Allen, but the collection also includes biographical information, meeting materials, presentations, reports, and strategic planning materials. Several papers relating to his research in transportation and logistics are also included.

Biography/Profile

Benjamin Joseph Allen was born in Indianapolis in January 5, 1947. Allen received his B.S. (1969) in business economics from Indiana University and both his M.A. (1973) in economics and his Ph.D. (1974) in economics from the University of Illinois.

Allen started his teaching career as Assistant Professor (1974-1979) of economics at Washington State University where he taught transportation economics. During this time, he took one year of leave to serve as Staff Economist (1976-1977) with the Office of Transportation Regulatory Policy in the U.S. Department of Transportation.

Allen joined the faculty at Iowa State University as Associate Professor (1979-1984) in the Department of Transportation and Logistics. He was promoted to Professor (1984-1988) and Chair (1984-1988) of the Department. He served as Director (1988-1990) of the Midwest Transportation Center and was named Distinguished Professor (1988-2006). Allen accepted the position of Interim Dean (1994-1995) and Dean (1995-2001) of the College of Business. He then started serving in the University's central administration as Interim Vice President for External Affairs (2001-2002), Interim Provost (2002), and Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost (2002-2006). Allen left Iowa State to serve as President (2006-2013) of the University of Northern Iowa, only to return to Iowa State to serve as Interim President (2017).

Allen was a nationally recognized researcher in the field of transportation and logistics, particularly in the areas of regulator reform, deregulation, and public transportation policy. Allen was a member of several professional organizations including the American Society of Transportation and Logistics, the Transportation Research Forum, and the Transportation and Public Utilities Group of the American Economic Association.

Allen married Patricia Crunk of Memphis, Tennessee, and together they had a daughter, Jessica.

Abstract

Ben Allen was a professor and administrator at Iowa State University, serving as Chair of the Department of Transportation and Logistics, Dean of the College of Business, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, and Interim University President. Allen's primary research interests included impact of transportation regulation and promotion on resource allocation, income distribution, managerial decision-making, and carrier and shipper management practices. This collection contains materials primarily from Allen's tenure as Iowa State University's Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost and includes speeches, committee materials, presentations, and reports. Several papers relating to his research in transportation and logistics are also included.
