Biography/Profile
In the 1960s, the Iowa Board of Regents and the Iowa community college system recognized a need to provide a smooth transition for students transferring from community colleges to the Iowa State Board of Regents Universities. The Liaison Advisory Committee on Transfer Students (LACTS), composed of representatives from Iowa’s community colleges and public universities, was formed in 1972 to fill this role.
Approximately 10,000 students transfer annually (as of 2009) from Iowa’s community colleges to the public universities (consisting of the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Northern Iowa). Through the development of eight statewide agreements, LACTS helps students carefully plan out their time at their respective community college. LACTS provides community college students with resources to keep them informed on transfer credit policies and to build relationships with Regents University advisors. In conjunction, LACTS also develops specific agreements between institutions of higher education and coordinates how the credits will be accepted to meet degree requirements.
