Scope and Content

The collection (1920-1921) contains the records of the Semi-Centennial Committee, including meeting minutes and correspondence, as well as programs, brochures, and booklets donated later and added to the committee records. In addition, there is a file of photocopied correspondence with Louis H. Pammel (Professor of Botany, 1889-1929) regarding his work with the semi-centennial and a bound volume of letters in response to invitations sent to representatives of other institutions.

Biography/Profile

On June 6-9, 1920, the Iowa State College (University) sponsored a semi-centennial celebration in honor of the 1869 opening of the institution. World War I prevented the celebration from being held in 1919. The celebration consisted of a Semi-Centennial Commencement, Founder's Day Celebration, and Homecoming feature for alumni. The celebration's activities included an historical pageant, military ceremonies, divisional symposia, a dinner, and a baseball game against Drake University.

Abstract

The Iowa State College (University) sponsored a semi-centennial celebration in honor of the 1869 opening of the institution on June 6-9, 1920. The celebration entailed a Semi-Centennial Commencement, Founder's Day Celebration, and Homecoming feature for alumni. This collection contains the records of the Semi-Centennial Committee, including meeting minutes and correspondence; programs; brochures; and booklets highlighting Iowa State's history. Also included is a file of photocopied correspondence with Louis H. Pammel (Professor of Botany, 1889-1929) regarding his work with the semi-centennial and a bound volume of letters in response to invitations sent to representatives of other institutions.
