Biography/Profile
The Iowa Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (IAFCS) was organized as the Iowa Home Economics Association in November 1909 at the annual meeting of the Iowa State Teachers Association. Alice D. Feuling of Iowa State College (University) was elected the first president. The name was changed in 1994 to the Iowa Association of Family and Consumer Sciences due to the name change of its parent affiliate, the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences.
The Association was formed to bring together homemakers and professionals interested in family and consumer sciences. IAFCS has been an active organization in both the state and in the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. Membership services include newsletters, annual meetings, workshops, and conferences.
The Association published the book Unit Method of Sewing (call no. TT508 Io9u) in 1950. By the fourth edition, the name of the book was changed to Unit Method of Clothing Construction (call no. TT508 Io9u4). Proceeds from the book and subsequent revisions went to a scholarship fund which started issuing scholarships to undergraduate students in family and consumer sciences in 1953. Starting in 1969, the scholarships were presented to graduate students.
