Scope and Contents

Contains files associated with the oral history project conducted by students in Dr. Amy Rutenberg's class, HIST 489: The World at War: The Vietnam War, Fall 2019. Files include audio files of the interviews, interview transcripts, srt files, vtt files, the course syllabus, a document describing the project and course, and a metadata file created by SCUA staff.

The audio files follow the naming convention Hist-489_[interviewer last name]. The transcript and plain text files are named with just the interviewer's last name.

File types include .srt, .vtt, .mp3, .m4a, .wav, .pdf, and .txt.

Biographical / Historical

In Fall 2019, Dr. Amy Rutenberg taught the course HIST 489: The World at War: The Vietnam War. According to the syllabus, the course "...[focused] on the history of belligerents’ justification for war, diplomacy, manpower policy, the technology of war, strategies and tactics, morality in war, protest, civilian and military experiences, gender roles, the aftermath of conflict, and collective memory and memorialization. More specifically, it [focused] on why the United States became involved in Vietnam, the conflict that ensued, how Americans and Vietnamese understood the war, how the conflict was an element of the larger Cold War, and the war’s results from American and Vietnamese perspectives."

One of the class assignments required the students to conduct an oral history interview about the Vietnam War.
