Scope and Content

This collection (1913-2016, undated) contains programs, proceedings, reports, minutes from annual meetings, officers' files, and committee materials. The officers' files include those of the president, secretary, treasurer, and program directors (including H. Derrick Blocker and Jon J. Tollefson). The collection includes files from many organizational committees, including program development for the annual meetings. Program development files also contain session and symposium information. The early proceedings contain summaries of discussions at the meetings and research conducted by members including studies of insects, laboratory and field work experiments, and methods for controlling insects (including insecticides and pesticides).

Folders containing materials of the national organizations (Association of Economic Entomologists and the Entomological Society of America) and the North Central States Entomologists records have the appropriate names at the head of the folder title. Folders without an organization's name at the head have materials related to the North Central Branch of the Entomological Society of America.

Biography/Profile

Prior to 1945, the North Central Branch of the Entomological Society of America was a separate organization known as the North Central States Entomologists (also called the North Central States Official Entomologists). The first meeting of the North Central States Entomologists was on March 15, 1921 in Lafayette, Indiana. In 1945, the North Central States Entomologists joined the American Association of Economic Entomologists (organized in 1889) as the North Central States Branch. The American Association of Economic Entomologists merged with the Entomological Society of America in 1953, and on March 19, 1953 the North Central States Branch changed its name to North Central Branch.

The objectives of the branch are to promote the science and study of entomology, to promote cooperation and collaboration among entomologists throughout the world, and to hold meetings and conferences. The states which have been included in the North Central Branch are: Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the Canadian provinces of Manitoba and western Ontario.
