This collection (1960-1996, undated) documents the career of Margaret Mae Gross and her work at the Iowa State University Library. Materials include biographical information, professional and private correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographs, photographic negatives, and Gross’s personnel records. The bulk of the collection consists of private correspondence, cards, photographs, and guest books from her 40th and 45th employment anniversary celebrations.

Biography/Profile

Margaret Mae Gross was born near Jefferson, Iowa, on January 24, 1924. She graduated from Ames High School in 1941 and immediately began working as a Clerk in the Iowa State University Library. She was appointed Executive Secretary to the Library Director, and then Administrative Secretary (1961-1974), Administrative Assistant (1974-1980), and Assistant to the Dean (1974-1989). During her 48 years of employment at the Iowa State University Library, she received many awards and honors, including a Superior Service Award in 1975. Gross was also a member of the Order of the Knoll and the Iowa State University 25-Year Club. In 1978, one of the first OCLC terminals in the library was dedicated to Gross, honoring her many long years of service to the library.

Gross passed away on February 27, 2010.

Abstract

Margaret Mae Gross (1924-2010) was a longtime administrative assistant in the Office of the Director/Dean at the Iowa State University Library. This collection documents her career at the Library and includes biographical information, awards materials, correspondence, photographs of her and other Library staff, and items related to celebrations of her long tenure at the Library.
