Scope and Content

This collection (1918-2004, undated) contains biographical information, correspondence, and photographs. The papers also include materials that document Petersen’s efforts in the preservation of the Farm House on Iowa State University’s campus and the establishment of the Farm House Museum. In addition, the papers include a scrapbook given to Petersen in recognition for all of her hard work for the Farm House.

Biography/Profile

Neva Maurine Petersen was born December 18, 1907 in Charter Oak, Iowa to William and Maude Spencer Petersen. She received her B.S. (1930) in applied art and M.A. (1948) from Iowa State College (University).



Petersen taught high school art courses in Ankeny, Iowa (1931-1935); Newton, Iowa (1935-1945); and Austin, Minnesota (1947-1948). After she received her M.A., she joined the staff of the University of Minnesota (1948-1952). She began her career at Iowa State as an Assistant Professor (1952-1956) in Applied Art and was promoted to Associate Professor (1956-1972), and Professor (1972-1974). She became Professor Emeritus in 1974.



Petersen received the Iowa State University Faculty Citation (1974) and the Christian Petersen Design Award (1983) from the College of Design. She worked tirelessly in the establishment of the Brunnier Art Museum and the Farm House Museum. She was also a founding member of the Friends of the University Museums and the University Museums Curators.



Neva M. Petersen passed away April 20, 2004.
