Scope and Content

This collection (1969-1997, undated) contains correspondence, minutes and agendas, travel information, reports, and photographs documenting Mathews' career at the Iowa State University Library. These files include Library leadership meeting materials and records of other Library committees she served on. Copies of presentations and papers written by Mathews on topics such as government and municipal publications and reference services are included. Later in her career, Mathews participated in several librarian exchanges with institutions in eastern Europe and Asia and these files document some of those experiences through correspondence, photographs, and reports.

Biography/Profile

Eleanor R. Mathews (1937-present) was an instructor, reference librarian, and assistant professor at Iowa State University from 1977 to 1997. Mathews was born on January 7, 1937, in Melrose, Massachusetts.



Mathews received her B.A. (1958) in biology from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts. She then spent two years working towards her M.S. in Botany and working as a teaching assistant in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology. In 1972, Mathews worked as a proofreader for the Iowa State University Press. Mathews earned her M.A. (1975) in Library Science from the University of Iowa. With her graduate degree, Mathews became a Government Documents Librarian (1975-1977) at the Drake University Law Library. In 1977, Mathews became an instructor and reference librarian at Iowa State University.



Mathews' primary professional interests include agricultural librarianship, user education in libraries, and Carnegie libraries in Iowa. Her major publications include "Iowa, General Publications" and "Des Moines" in Municipal Government Reference Sources: Publications and Collections, pp. 116 and 120-121; and "Bibliography of Agriculture," Reference Services Review 7 (2): 57-62 (April-June 1979).



Mathews was part of numerous honorary and professional organizations during her career. She was a member of the American Library Association, Association of College and Research Libraries, International Association of Agricultural Librarians and Documentalists, Beta Phi Mu (Library Science honorary), Vice-chairperson for the Government Documents Section of the Iowa Library Association, and the Iowa State Historical Society.



While at Iowa State University, Mathews participated in the World Food Institute Library and Information Task Force (1978-1979), Library Graduate Instruction Committee, Library User Services Survey Committee, Library Travel and Research Fund Committee, and was Vice-chairperson of the Library Faculty (1978-1979).



Eleanor Mathews married Ames resident Jerold Mathews and had two children, Carl and Nels.
