Biography/Profile

Sigma Xi was organized in 1886 to honor excellence in scientific investigation and promote research and cooperation among researchers in all fields of science and engineering. Sigma Xi is an international, multidisciplinary research society with over 60,000 members in more than 100 countries.

A petition for the establishment of an Iowa State Chapter was signed in the summer of 1920 and a charter was granted at the National Conference in December later that year. The first elected officers included President R. E. Buchanan, Vice President S. W. Beyer, Secretary John M. Evvard, and Treasurer Charles Murray.

Membership in Sigma Xi is granted through nomination either Full or Associate. To be elected to Associate Membership, an individual must have conducted an independent investigation and written a report concerning their research. Associate members are expected to later achieve full membership. Full Membership is granted to an individual who has shown noteworthy achievement as an original investigator in a field of pure or applied science. The achievement must be evidenced by publication as a first author on two articles published in a refereed journal, patents, written reports, thesis or dissertation.
