Scope and Content

This collection (1929-1933, undated) contains course work and class notes courses taken by W. Carman Black while attending Iowa State College (University). Most of the classes were in chemistry and chemical engineering. A few additional items, such a copy of Black’s undergraduate thesis, Tau Bet Pi engineering honor society pledge book, and college report cards and registration cards, are also included.

Biography/Profile

William Carman Black was born on December 12, 1910, in Berwyn, Illinois. His family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa by 1913. Black, who commonly went by Carman, received his B.S. (1932) in chemical engineering from Iowa State College (University). At Iowa State, Black participated in Theta Chi, Tau Beta Pi, the Iowa Engineer, Interfraternity Council, VEISHEA, and other activities.



After graduating from Iowa State, Black earned a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His entire professional career was with Penick and Ford, Ltd., at the My-T-Fine Lab in Brooklyn, New York, and the research lab in Cedar Rapids.



Black married Rita Power on March 15, 1941, and they had three children. Black died on March 10, 1993.
