Scope and Content

This collection (1910-1914, 2004, undated) contains a short biography of Irving Loveland written by his son, postcards, and Loveland’s college scrapbook. The scrapbook contains over 130 images, mostly of Iowa State College (University) campus buildings and student activities dating from 1912 to 1914. Included are photographs of many of the fraternity houses near campus, interior shots of the Latauma fraternity house, and numerous shots of students on campus and at the fraternity house. There are also images of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations (1913-1914), May Day festivals (1912-1913), the Chemistry Hall fire (1913), and the Engineer’s Campfire (1912). There are also several dance cards, programs and other college memorabilia.

Biography/Profile

Irving E. Loveland graduated from Dows High School in Iowa in 1909. He graduated from Iowa State College (University) with a B.S. (1914) in electrical engineering. He was a member of Latauma fraternity.



His first job was superintendent of the General Electric dynamometer plant in Schenectady, New York. He then worked for General Motors at the Remy Electric Plant in Indiana. There he worked with Charles Wilson on the first automobile self-starter. During World War II, Loveland was the civilian manager of the spare parts division of the U.S. Army and was one of only two civilians present during a meeting with General Dwight Eisenhower before the Normandy invasion.



Loveland retired to Vermont where he died in 1980.
