Biography/Profile

William Corwin Stuart was born on April 28, 1920, and graduated from Iowa State College (University) with a B.A. (1941). In 1942, Stuart received his J.D. degree from the University of Iowa College of Law and was admitted to the Iowa Bar Association. After serving in the U.S. Air Force and the Navy, he joined the law practice of his father, George C. Stuart, in Chariton, Iowa.



His political career began in 1946, when he was named city attorney for Chariton for a year. In 1953, Stuart was elected to the Iowa State Senate (1953-1957) and was re-elected (1957-1961). Stuart was then an associate justice (1961-1971) on the Iowa Supreme Court and on November 1, 1971, was named U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Iowa.



Stuart died on August 12, 2010, in Lucas, Iowa.

Abstract

William Corwin Stuart, a 1941 graduate of Iowa State University, served in various political positions from 1946 onward. Starting out as a city attorney for Chariton, he served the Iowa State Senate (1953-1961), and then to the Iowa Supreme Court, acting as associate justice (1961-1971); he eventually became U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Iowa on November 1, 1971. This collection contains materials kept by Stuart during his political career, including files regarding the economy, education, a contested election, legislative reform, reapportionment, and taxes. Also included are a series of committee records, correspondence, and notes related to articles written by Stuart.
