Biography/Profile

The Iowa Agricultural College (IAC) Grange was organized January 3, 1910, as Chapter #2047 of the National Grange of the Order of Patrons of Husbandry. The campus chapter was also referred to as the Iowa State College Grange. Charter members included many of the faculty at the time including S. A. Beach, R. K. Bliss, R. E Buchanan, C. F. Curtiss, P. G. Holden, and L. H. Pammel. Later members included President Pearson and Ada Hayden. Though the campus Grange continued until 1939, there was considerable debate to cease the group during the 1920s.

The Grange Movement, founded in 1867, was very quickly adopted across the country due to the poor economic and social conditions endured by the farmers. The purpose of the organization was the advancement of agriculture through education rather than politics. At monthly meetings of the campus organization discussions focused on parliamentary law, book reviews, subjects of the day, and farming problems.
