Scope and Content

The collection (1979-2009, undated) contains Ingebritsen's papers and articles, committee notes, correspondence, class lecture notes, proposals, workshops, and biographical information. Of particular note are his files on Project Bio, Iowa State's first online class, and the development of online learning programs at the University.

Thomas S. Ingebritsen was born on November 21, 1845, in Boise, Idaho. He earned a B.S. (1968) in chemistry from Oregon State University and a Ph.D. (1979) in chemistry rom the Indiana University School of Medicine.

Before arriving at Iowa State, Ingebritsen was a Research Fellow (1979-1982) at the University of Dundee in Scotland and an Assistant Professor (1982-1986) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He accepted a position as Assistant Professor (1986-1988) in the Department of Zoology and Genetics at Iowa State University and was promoted to Associate Professor (1988-2010). He retired in 2010 and received emeritus faculty status in the Department of Genetics, Development and Cell Biology.

Ingebritsen was interested in distance education and outreach to biology educators. He developed Iowa State's first online class, Project Bio, which began in 1996. Project Bio began as an electronic seminar series with lectures on advances in biology education and research. It was available through the Internet and could be utilized by college and high school biology teachers in their own classrooms. Within three years, Project Bio had grown from two courses and 29 students to ten courses reaching more than 500 students.

Thomas S. Ingebritsen was an Associate Professor in the Iowa State University Department of Zoology and Genetics. He developed Iowa State's first online class, Project BIO, which was used by college and high school teachers in their own classrooms to share multimedia lectures on advances in biology education and research. This collection contains papers documenting Ingebritsen's teaching career at Iowa State University including records relating to the development of Project Bio.
