Scope and Content

This collection contains articles, calendars, correspondence, diagrams, dissertations, faculty meeting notes, figures, grant proposals, lecture notes, journals, newspaper presentations, patent papers, performance evaluations, personal notes, printed materials, research notes, and theses.



Stadler’s years as a professor of Genetics are represented by several printed research articles, Genetic Club advisor notes, and lecture notes from the various Genetics classes Stadler taught while at Iowa State University. The collection also includes her original dissertation from University of Missouri (1955), notarized papers from the United States Patent Office noting her successful patent proposal, and personal journals (1975-1990). The letter of recognition honoring her as a University Professor is also included.

Biography/Profile

Joan Stadler graduated from Wellesley College with honors, receiving a B.S. (1951) in botany, and a Ph.D. (1955) from the University of Missouri in genetics. Stadler was a Predoctoral Fellow (1952-1954) for the Department of Genetics at the University of Missouri and a Postdoctoral Fellow (1956-1958) at the National Cancer Institute in the Department of Microbiology in Cleveland, Ohio. She worked at Yale University as a research assistant (1962-1972) before becoming an Assistant Professor at Iowa State University (1972-1976) in the Department of Genetics. She was promoted to Associate Professor (1976-1981) and a Professor (1981-1996). She was named a University Professor in 1994. Stadlter retired from Iowa State University in 1996.



Stadler began the Interdepartmental Graduate degree for Genetics at Iowa State University. She is a member of the Genetics Society, Society for Ethics and Life Sciences and Sigma Xi where she served as President (1985).
