Biography/Profile
Alan L. Selman was born on April 2, 1941 in Bronx, New York. He received a B.S. (1962) from Cum Laude from City College of New York, M.S. (1964) from University of California, and Ph.D. (1970) in Mathematics from Pennsylvania State University.
Selman was a Graduate Assistant (1963-1964) at University of California, Berkeley, Graduate Assistant (1964-1968) at Pennsylvania State University, Instructor (1968-1970) at Pennsylvania State University, Research Mathematician and Lecturer (1970-1972) at Carnegie-Mellon University, Assistant Professor (1972-1977), and then became an Associate Professor (1977-1982) and then Professor (1982-1986) in the Department of Computer Science at Iowa State University.
He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, Association for Symbolic Logic, Association for Computing Machinery, ACM Special Interest Group for Automata and Computability Theory, ACM Special Interest Group for Computer Science Education, and IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Mathematical Foundations of Computing. He received the Fulbright Award (1981-1982) to lecture in Computer Science at the Technion in Israel.
He had a wife named Sharon, and together they had two children named Jeffrey and Heather.
