Scope and Content

This collection (1953-2015, undated) contains biographical information, lists, telephone and address books, calendars, correspondence, school papers, notes, and exams, laboratory reports, printed materials, committee records, seminar materials, lecture notes, student evaluations, materials relating to conferences, trips, and visits by companies and scholars, grant proposals, research notebooks, publications, research data, photographs, videotapes, and computer tape. Records from Thiel’s tenure as Iowa State University Chemistry Department Chair are restricted and are unavailable until 2066.

Biography/Profile

Patricia A. Thiel, a native of Adrian, Minnesota, received her B.A. (1975) from Macalester College and a Ph.D (1981) from the California Institute of Technology in chemistry. She has been employed as an Associate Scientist at Control Data Corporation (1975-1976); Technical staff member at Sandia National Laboratory (1981-1983); post-doctoral research associate at the University of California at Berkeley (1983); Technical staff at Thermeonics Labs (1983); Assistant Professor (1983-1988), Associate Professor (1988-1991) and Professor (1991- ) of Chemistry at Iowa State University. She was named Chair of the Department in 1999.

Thiel has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship (1981); the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship (1984-1986); the National Science Foundation Presidential Young Investigator (1985); the Henry Dreyfus Fellowship (1986-1990); and a faculty award (1991) from the National Science Foundation. She has published numerous professional articles and is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Vacuum Society (AVS), and the Materials Research Society (MRS). In 2000, she was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) for “her pioneering work on the surface structures, stabilities, and other properties of metal films and quasicrystals, and the elucidation of surface structure and chemistry of water on films.”
