Scope and Content

This collection contains Shepard's professional papers detailing his work on the Jefferson Highway and getting paved highways in Northern Iowa, farm mortgages, and the Mason City Rotary Club. Types of materials include reports, applications, correspondences, pamphlets, programs, and articles.

Correspondence between Dr. William G. Murray, Iowa State University Department of Economics and Sociology, and Hugh H. Shepard relevant to the acquisition and depositing of this collection at Iowa State University can be found in box 144, folder 5.

Born in 1876, Hugh Hurst Shepard received a B.A. and a law degree from the University of Iowa. Shepard helped create Jefferson Highway (Highway 65), served as the president of the Jefferson Highway Association, and was a leader in creating paved highways in northern Iowa. He was a charter member of the Iowa and American Land Title Association and served as the organization's first treasurer. Shepard was a member of the Iowa State Bar Association and served as the president of the Cerro Gordo County Bar Association. Shepard died in 1970.
