Description of Material
This sub-group (1955-1984, undated) contains project applications, reports, memoranda of agreements, and correspondence for various projects undertaken by the Department of Forestry through the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station. Some of the projects were also done in cooperation with the North Central Region, United States Forest Service, and other universities. Topics found in the documents consist of markets and uses for wood, forest recreation, and tree improvement, diseases, and decay. Projects of interest include the Vegetative Reclamation of Iowa Coal Strip Mine Spoil Banks (1952-1959), Ecological Aspects of Outdoor Recreation Planning and Development (1970), Adaptation of Trees in Iowa (1950-1964), and Forest and Marginal Farmland in Iowa: Opportunities for Optimal Use (1960-1962).

Biography/Profile
The Hatch Act, passed by Congress in 1887, established funding for the development of a network of agricultural experiment stations at state land-grant colleges. The Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station was established at Iowa State in 1888. It is directed by the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and is responsible for coordinating research conducted by the college's faculty and staff. In addition, the Experiment Station works with dozens of departments, centers, and programs across the Iowa State University campus that are focused on research in the biological, physical, and social sciences.
